Over the years, I have found that for lots of us, life is a little like this photograph. We walk through life as if we are caught in a mysterious maze, coming up against dead ends, obstacles, and so we move backwards and try the same things again. This time we might try them in a different order, at a different pace, but the same none the less.
We continue to walk within the lines, and if I ask why, it is very difficult to answer. We conform to so much without questioning or even daring to step over the lines and onto a different path. Even when we can see how easy it is to step over, something often holds us back from doing so.
My wife works and supports children and families living with autism and other things that make life a little more challenging. One night she was supporting a family at their home. Keeping the lids entertained by painting pictures. One of the kids looked at my wife’s efforts and said, ‘That’s not very good is it?’
My wife replied, ‘Well, if I come back and try again, I may improve a little.’
‘I’m so glad you didn’t say practice makes perfect. Because if you are doing something wrong, and do it over and over again, you just get better at doing it wrong,’ said the child.
